Samantha & Kevin – Red, Black & Silver Saskatoon Berry Farm Wedding

June 23, 2015

Farm cats, chickens and one mean turkey were only a few of the many locals of the farm that tried to have their hand in Sam & Kevin’s Wedding day.

The day started with hundreds of Mothers buying baked goods, flowers and amazing accents for their home. It was Mothers Day. I wove past little feet and the giggles of young ones holding their Mom’s hands to find the narrow yellow hallway that takes you to the Bridal suite at Saskatoon Farms in DeWinton, Alberta. There I found Sam, her Mom and Bridesmaids getting the final touches of Bridal prep. After a few introductions I started shooting Sam’s dress. I love the natural light that’s all around the main part of the prep area so I went on the balcony to shoot Sam’s dress. It was almost tranquil hearing all the hussle and bussle below. It was two different worlds – the outside of the farm and the inside of the prep room.

The girls were practicing twerking and Sam was getting her make up done. After details were complete I chatted with Sam’s Mom Debra & started capturing the moments that were only the start of the day. I couldn’t have anticipated what emotion would emerge throughout the day.

Kevin is a very straight forward, ambitious, motivating kind of guy. Someone you wouldn’t expect to tear up, but when Sam came around the cherry trees and he turned to see her for the first time, his hands flew to his face, his jaw dropped and the tears started to flow. I’m a sucker for raw emotion but normally can compose myself as I get wrapped up capturing the best angles of the situations but I couldn’t help but cry like a baby when I saw how much emotion Kevin had for Sam. This moment was not the only but just the beginning of the tears for the day. We shot some romantic portraits while the clouds rolled in and then the sky brightened up and we started joking around and capturing fun moments and sweet ones. As we walked back to head to their ceremony I noticed Kevin put his hand into Sams. It reminded me of the small things that will make their marriage so special.

What can I even say about their ceremony? Nothing I say can even begin to explain how personal and touching their ceremony was. The laughter and small moments of eye gazing followed by their friends gathering around them at the end of their ceremony made the moments unexpected and intimate.

This was my first time shooting in the new Red House Reception Venue at the Saskatoon Farm. The staff at the farm does such an amazing job of decorating the space with rustic but elegant items that compliment the non-rustic classic & timeless style Sam and Kevin were going for for their wedding.

The dance party was hilarious. The Grooms Men and Kevin rode the .25 cent horse ride and Sam’s Aunt’s danced in sync to different songs through out the night. The party was really good thanks to Steve Csabonas wicked DJing skills.

Again because I’m a sucker for asking the bride a few questions about their day – here are some words from Sam:

Your top 3 best moments and why:

First look – because I couldn’t have asked for a better reaction from Kevin (Thanks for not allowing my Mom to come by the way, she told me that after she wanted to be there and I told her that was not how it goes.)

Speeches – because they were all so lovely and heartfelt.  Marrying my best friend and sharing it with the people closest to us.

Honourable mention moment – When the MC Geoff spills red wine ALL down Kristine’s dress because come on, it wasn’t me and it was a bit humorous.

Wedding song, explain choice for song:

Hedley – For the Nights I Can’t Remember and Aerosmith – Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.  Aerosmith because Kevin wanted it even though it’s CHEESY (I had the DJ add it at the end of the dance).

Hedley because it’s our song – it was decided a long time ago, I think because of the lyrics?
