These cinematic engagement photos in Kananaskis felt like an adventure from the moment I left home. On my drive into the Canadian Rocky Mountains, I went from rain to sunshine in what felt like no time at all. The mountains were showing off. Along the highway I spotted dozens of deer, several bighorn sheep, and even a grizzly cub hanging out on the side of the road.
By the time I arrived, the skies had cleared and we were ready to explore.
A Romantic Adventure Around the Lake
We met in a parking lot, spent a few minutes figuring out if any of us had something in our vehicles that could cut the zip tie off their bear spray, and then headed off on our adventure.
As we wandered around the lake, we chatted about wedding planning, restaurant reviews, and all the excitement that comes with planning a destination wedding. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like spending an evening with friends.
Stacy and Brandon brought all the vibes to this session. Their energy together was effortless and fun, making it easy to create a mix of editorial engagement photos and candid moments that felt genuine to who they are as a couple.
Playful, Romantic, and Full of Personality
One of my favourite things about this session was how naturally everything unfolded.
There were quiet moments, lots of laughter, a little PDA, and plenty of opportunities for them to simply be themselves. Stacy’s infectious smile and Brandon’s incredible style made every frame feel elevated while still feeling authentic and real.
Stormy Skies in the Canadian Rocky Mountains
One of the things I love most about photographing in the Canadian Rocky Mountains is how quickly the weather can change.
For most of the evening we had beautiful conditions, but right at the end the weather shifted. The wind picked up, dark clouds rolled in, and the calm lake transformed into crashing waves. The dramatic conditions created the perfect cinematic backdrop and gave us an entirely different mood for the final photographs.

How Did You Meet?
“We met at work! It is still debated to this day who reached out to who first…”
Engagement Story: Who Asked Who and How Did It Go Down?
Stacy: “I had a suspicion Brandon would propose on this trip we had planned, but then talked myself out of it. We were travelling across 3 countries, 6 different cities, most of it with friends. But we had one night in Kyoto alone, at a ryokan we loved and had been to once in 2020, and Brandon proposed in a cozy library. It was quiet, intimate, and serene until I realized the ring had at one point been left unattended in a train station locker…”
Brandon: “It was a very secure train station locker! But yes, I did propose at the ryokan. Finding a place to stash a ring in a traditional Japanese robe was a challenge. I had this huge speech planned but when it got time to doing it, I kind of blacked out and skipped the entire speech.”
What Is Your Favourite Thing About One Another?
Stacy: “Besides his ability (and joy!) to cook wonderful meals and dimples, Brandon knows me better than I know myself, encouraging me to approach life with joy and gumption while making me have so much fun along the way.”
Brandon: “Stacy cares so much for the people around her and is selfless, and is always willing to go above and beyond and be flexible so that everyone around her is happy.”
What Was Your Favourite Part of Your Shoot?
Stacy: “I was so nervous! I’m not a natural poser, and honestly once I felt like I was actually comfortable in front of the camera I was having a lot of fun having Brandon participate in some PDA :)”
Brandon: “It felt like an adventure! Sarah’s direction and encouragement really helped us get comfortable very quickly!”
Why Did You Feel the Location Was Wicked for Your Shoot?
“We love dramatic mountains. The prospect of bears being present spooked me a bit, but it was worth it!”
What Are You Most Excited and Looking Forward to for Your Wedding Day?
Stacy: “I’m so excited to be able to gather all my closest friends and family in a beautiful remote location to celebrate! I love a good party, and we’re really excited to show our appreciation to those who have supported us along the way. I am lowkey very excited about my outfits for the weekend as well :)”
Brandon: “Having all our closest friends and family together and giving them a very Brandon and Stacy experience!”
If You Could Own a Dinosaur as a Pet, What Would You Choose?
Stacy: “If we believe that a lot of dinosaurs had feathers and were built like birds, some sort of Compsognathus would be delightful. It’d basically be a chicken with more teeth, and I love eggs!”
Brandon: “Obviously a T-Rex.”

Stacy: “Booze (sake).”
Brandon: “I’d love to say coffee but it is booze…”
